This camera was unusable out of the box, until I placed its latest firmware on a micro SD card and manually updated the camera’s firmware. I should not be forced to tinker with a brand new camera. Do better, GoPro.

We use this for scuba diving and whitewater kayaking. It is amazing! Great quality video and SO durable! I like the added features from our previous 10. Being able to screw it directly onto a tri pod helps also. I have taken this thing through kayak roll classes and submerged it quite a bit with no issues.

As someone who mainly uses a GoPro for real estate videos, I was curious to see how the HERO13 Black stacks up compared to my HERO11. The short version? It’s an incremental upgrade with some nice-to-have features but nothing groundbreaking if you’re coming from a recent model.

    What’s New:

    • 5.3K60 Video & 27MP Photos: The resolution is stunning, but if you’ve used the HERO11, the difference isn’t huge. The video quality is slightly crisper, and the slow-mo feature is WAY cooler—definitely a win if you love cinematic action shots.
    • Autoboost Feature: This is essentially GoPro’s REELSTEADY software built into the camera. It’s a lifesaver for real estate footage, saving tons of time in post-production. The stabilization is smooth and seamless.
    • Touch Screen Responsiveness: A subtle but appreciated improvement—the screen is snappier and feels more reliable during operation.
    • Lens Add-Ons: The ability to add new lenses is intriguing, but for my use case, I’m not sure how often I’ll take advantage of it.

    What Feels the Same:

    • If you’ve used the HERO11, the general experience will feel very familiar. It’s not a revolutionary leap forward but more of a refinement of what GoPro already does well.

    Overall Thoughts:

If you’re upgrading from something like a HERO9 or older, the HERO13 Black will feel like a massive step up. But coming from the HERO11, it’s more of a luxury than a necessity. The slo-mo and Autoboost are standout features, but the other upgrades are pretty minor for my specific needs.

Would I recommend it? If you’re serious about getting the best slow-motion footage or want built-in REELSTEADY, absolutely. Otherwise, your HERO11 is still a powerhouse.

Would love to hear how others are using the new lens add-ons—maybe I’m missing out!

I’m a GoPro user as well as I own a few DJI products and was on the fence between this and the action five and zero regrets.

My only beef with GoPro is why change the batteries?? You had the same batteries for so long now why change now??

Love some of the newer functions coming from a 10/11 user… I guess I’m buying some more batteries lol… But I will be a GoPro user for life

It’s worth the extra money to get an official action camera. I’ve bought some off brand and cheaper action cameras in the past and always run into issues. This camera last me a life time.

I love the Go Pro 13 , but i find the software for editing not much good. I had to download another program to edit. The picture quality is great. I had to order two batteries they last about 1.5 hours each.

I’ve always like the gopro line of action cameras. Very sturdy. Good quality. Haven’t tested this one yet but will uodate this review once I have!

Been a long time since I got a GoPro and it’s surprising how quick the battery still seems to drain, even with this “new” battery with more capacity. They REALLY need to improve their efficiency with the next one to at least match the competitor’s battery life. You have to turn off EVERYTHING on this to get one battery to last at least an hour.

Low light footage is garbage, even mildly lit footage is grainy. And this thing overheats pretty quick if you don’t have any airflow. Even in my testing with it in front of a fan it gets surprisingly hot to the touch even with the new heatsink in front. I don’t plan to use it in the dark so it’s pretty negligible to me but be warned that smartphones look way better in low light.

But all in all it does great things in a small package. I haven’t run into any stability issues otherwise.

Seriously GoPro, work on the efficiency. Heat and power usage needs a big upgrade for the next one.

GoPro is the standard for action cameras and if you have a whole ecosystem of accessories for it, then this should be your next camera. GoPro 13 black still offers the most vivid and cinematic footage when compared with all the competitors. The GoPro 13 shares a lot in common with the 12, same sensor, same processor and some of the same settings. The improvements come in the form of a better battery, better heat management, GPS is back (it was gone with the 12), external charging/data cable, tons of smart accessories (the camera recognizes them and adjusts settings accordingly) and burst slow modes (like those in phones). Notably, I find that ND filters are hard to adjust properly, and quite frankly, I get confused as to which one is the right one to use. In this version, the camera recognizes it, then changes settings accordingly and even better yet… it will tell you to change it if you are using the wrong one for the current lighting conditions – honestly super useful if you need these filters. What is not so nice is that there are better cameras out there with better dynamic range and that can greatly outperform in low light, like the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. When the cost is the same, the GoPro is not always the go to choice. I also hate the fact that I need to register my camera, then update it before I can use it… not very ready for action if you ask me. In brief, this is the next iteration of the GoPro family, and it is good, but it is not revolutionary. If you are buying your next action camera then this will work but if you have never purchased one and you will need to buy a ton of accessories with it, I would check the competition before committing.

Awesome, love it. Tons of YouTube videos to watch about the hero 13 if you’re considering it.
