I was a daily bicycle commuter in the ‘70s. In 1977 I cycle toured Europe for 4 months. Cycling was my primary source of exercise, recreation and fun in San Francisco and Sacramento in the ‘80s. Then I moved to the suburbs; the kind of suburbs where your kids cannot walk or bike to school because traffic is too dangerous. There were too many multi-lane 50 mph roads and too many incompetent or texting drivers “sharing” the road with me. I curtailed my cycling activity. Now, in need of low-impact exercise, I’m back in the saddle again. From this cyclist’s perspective the roads today are even more dangerous and scary. Fortunately there are new bike lights that should help capture the attention of motorists and make my rides safer. I chose the brightest bike light that I could find: the Tailgator. Not only does the Tailgator have 5 modes of brightness and flash patterns, it has a super bright brake light that is activated when you decelerate. It even auto-adjusts so it is brighter under sunny daylight conditions. I have owned my Tailgator for about 6 weeks. It appears to be well-built and durable. But, I would like a mode where I could have all three LED lights activated at once (in oder words, “brake light feature” staying on permanently). I understand it could drain the battery life faster, but I would be ok with that.
Otherwise, after cycling for over ten years and buying many rear lights, this is my favorite rear bike light of all to this date.

I installed it on my bike for today’s bike ride (Mode 2) and it tested well. I was surprised that it comes up to “braking action” intensity in mere moments … even when walking the bike and stopping it. No speed was required to get it to act. I’ve wanted to have a really good lamp and I’ve finally found it. Great Value and it’s really bright when it flashes. Nicely done, Folks! Too bad I can only give it 5 stars!

2 Year Long Term Review
In just over two years I have bought six Tailgator Brake Lights for myself, my friends and family.
I don’t typically write reviews, but this is a newer company and I want to support them. They took a long time to develop this light. They have an excellent product, very few issues (which I’ll explain), tremendous customer service – and I’m really irritated by several reviews last year that gave it 1 star for completely absurd reasons, and I want to set the record straight. And, yes, there are a slew of cheaper lights for 1/3 the cost with thousands of reviews however the quality and performance are not equal to the Tailgator brake light. With electronics you get what you pay for so ask yourself what is your life worth, or that of your family??
I road ride, gravel, and mountain bike as well. I’m not an expert cyclist but an avid biker, nonetheless. My bike(s) are nor cheap nor very expensive, but I buy products, from derailleurs to helmets that work! The Tailgator light is well built light – solid, nothing cheap in its construction. Two features that stand out. The brightness of the LEDs and the brake feature which is very accurate. It won’t work if you are slowing from 10 mph to 8 mph, otherwise it would be going all the time and the battery would run out sooner. It has three 100 lumen LEDs with 5 light patterns. Three with the brake function and two without. The ones with the brake function will last 6-10 hours. The others will last 15 hours plus. I just haven’t ridden longer than that. It depends on how often the brake function is activated because when it works, all LEDs are triggered simultaneously.
Any automobile or cyclist behind will see it clearly, day or night, whether they are right behind the bike or off to the side. The light is evenly spread out to the sides so the viewing angle is substantially more than other lights.
I have no problems removing the mount and can do it in 5 seconds. It’s securely mounted and comes off as easy as tying your shoes. One issue that occurred to me a few weeks ago. The rubber band broke. I’ve read this in a few posts. The other 5 lights are fine so I think it is a limited issue, but the company is aware of it and wants anyone to call or email and they will send you new bands immediately. I wrote to the company. Literally, in 8 minutes, the owner tracked me down, called and sent our more bands that I received in 48 hours. Free. No ifs, ands or buts. They stand begin their product – a one year money back guarantee and get this! Lifetime guarantees on the light. It doesn’t work. Call and they’ll send you a new one. A new company understands that not only must their product be good, but the customer service must be top notch.
After researching and reading many reviews on brake tail lights I decided on the Tailgator because it’s the first one of its kind to actually function as a brake light wirelessly. We all feel very safe knowing that vehicles can see me from almost any direction.
That’s enough said. I’m a photographer and videographer. I know what means quality and what is second rate. I never knew the owner before his call. No, I’m not getting a free light for this review. Sometimes a company goes the extra mile. They have. If you want to feel safe. If you want your kids to be safe, try the Tailgator. (Hey-it’s on sale now, 20,00 buck off for the next 30 days I think). my sole purpose on purchasing this instead of a very expensive “street legal kit” for my ebike is the mode 5 with brake light feature. there’s none. what a bummer though. I would have settled for mode 4 with the brake light feature too. everything works, the lights are BRIGHT as HELL. attaching it was very simple. can be detached easily to recharge and so far a great battery life. the brake light feature does work amazing on mode 1-3. but. I wish there was the solid red with the brake feature. this would be a 5 star.
