I replaced all the housing a cables on my commuter bike some time ago and used the old wire cutters in my tool box. It was ok, but definitely not ideal. It was my crappy commuter, so, whatever. Then my cable snapped on my road bike on a ride. I decided I was going to replace all the gear/brake housing and cables. I also decided a dedicated tool with the awl in the handle was what I was going to use to make the job easier. This tool did not disappoint. Cut everything cleanly and the awl opened the cut ends in the housing that got flattened during cutting.

For the record, I used Shimano SP41 housing/cable set for the gears and Shimano DA 9000 set for the brakes. Result was shifting like butter and very responsive braking.

The product works wonderfully, and will get the job done when cutting most cable. I’ve been using it for about a month now to cut brake cables on my bike and some other wire around the house, and it’s worked great. I believe the tool is fairly priced (I paid $24.09) and it has done a great job so far! I looked at other bike cable cutters (including the Jagwire Pro Cable Crimper & Cutter) but this one definitely was the best deal for the price. I’m not sure if a cheaper cable cutter would do as good a job (it gives a very clean cut) and last as long (it feels super sturdy).

So far, so good, 5 stars for now. I just purchased this item due to all the high reviews it received over other similar tools. Just as most have said – it cuts through the actual cable, the housing, the housing with cable, and the little awl built in to the handle does a nice job of opening the hole up. And – it crimps on both the end caps for the cable, and the housing end caps with no problem. I used this rebuilding my and my wife’s mountain bikes. What started with a “cart” full of various inexpensive single purpose tools, ended up as this item for less than the total of the cheaper items which would have no doubt failed over time. The only thing left to see is if this thing lasts and continues to cut so cleanly over the long haul. If it doesn’t, this review will be amended accordingly. Right now – I’m glad I bought this.

I got these this morning (07/08/2024) straight out to the shed and tried on a piece of brake cable, first thing is the cut is clean and doesn’t squash the end nor leave a jagged bit like my previous cable cutters of an international brand name, i used the built in awl to make sure the inner was nice and clear (it was) I thought at first these cutters were a bit pricey but you do indeed get what you pay for.
I highly recommend these btw I have been riding and maintaining my solo, tandem and now a pair of recumbent trikes for over 50 years, I do not recommend lightly but these are excellent.

Good tool, made very well. Cuts through the cable housing and cables with ease. Leaves some tiny burrs when cutting the housing though, the built in awl helps reshape and clean things up a bit. I had a utility knife handy to clean excess plastic burs from the casing though. Nature of the beast I guess. Definetly alot better than my rusty old side cuts. Does a fine job crimping ferrules as well. I still think price is a bit steep for what it is, I would have given it 5 stars if it was around $15-18.

Cut thru the ripcord aka ‘mountain pro’ brake housing like butter..more like chunky butter.. the cable had no chance either. Poker thing opened up cable as expected. Cable end crimper sort of meh but maybe I just suck, it stays on the cable end but has some wiggle.

I changed out my bike handlebar recently and that meant I had to run new cables to fit the different shifter and brake placements.
Previously I had been getting by with diagonal cutters and an awl but I decided to step it up for this repair and get a proper tool. It made all the difference in the world.
It cuts housings and cables very cleanly. The built in awl is great and the crimper is passable.
Honestly saved me a couple minutes a cable by having all the tools I needed (except hex tools obviously) in one hand. The built quality is solid and compares with ParkTool at a cheaper cost. The only issue I had with it is the crimping is further from the fulcrum than I’d like so it doesn’t crimp as tight as a dedicated tool.
Overall a very solid addition to my toolbox.

Used this tool for some times to build my bicycles and now is a good time to write review.

This cutter is a very good one. You can find cheaper one to do the same job, but this tool holds its quality and the feel in your hand just makes you do your work easy and smooth.

I have three cable cutters from different brands, this one is my best quality cutter and I can even use it to do some other things

Had trouble with my own previous solutions. Forked over the cash for this and came out absolutely perfect the first time!
