Review of Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP: The Cargo King of Bike Bags
Meet the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag EXP, the cargo king of bike bags. This rugged, well-made bag attaches with a slide rail—so easy, it’s like bike bag magic. And roomy? It’s practically a portable storage unit! Perfect for your biking adventures or hauling enough snacks to fuel a large picnic and a few days’ worth of clothing.
I haven’t used the saddle bags yet, but they seem just as well made. This bag is ready for whatever you throw at it—or into it!

Exactly what I was looking for. Easy to use storage compartment on top for keys, mobile phone and even lunch and extra storage compartments that easily fit my laptop which was my main concern. Overall very happy with product great value for money.

This is definitely an upgrade from my older trunk bag. The most obvious aspect of that is that it has better structure to it, so it doesn’t flop from side to side based on how the contents move. The organization features are also nice. It’s just enough that everything stays in place so I can find it, without subdividing so much that your load has to exactly match what the designers had in mind.
When needed, the integrated panniers are surprisingly capacious. When they aren’t needed, they fold away neatly. The elastic loops to connect to the bottom of the rack do feel unnecessary; I only actually attach them because leaving them dangling to tangle in spokes seems dangerous. But they add very little work to expanding or stowing the panniers
The only real downside I’ve found so far is that this bag can not be used in conjunction with my Banjo Brothers Grocery Pannier. (Or any other side bag that sticks up above the top edge of the rack.) With my last trunk bag, which also had fold-out panniers, I could easily mount and unmount the Grocery Pannier. The increased rigidity and width of this bag, which I mostly appreciate, make that impossible. For certain loads, it’s nice to have the option of that or a similar large pannier instead of the built-in ones. With the MTX mount system it’s not that much of a hassle to take the trunk bag off to accommodate panniers, but the trunk bag is where I keep my lock and emergency kit and moving those IS a hassle.

Just the right amount of storage for short trips and the expandability is awesome. Keeps my spare tube, lock, small pump and bike tool all in one spot. Slides off the rack easily if you are going to be away from your bike. Highly recommended.

I’m absolutely thrilled with my Topeak MTX Truck Bag EXP. One notable aspect I discovered is that this bag is available in various styles, some with a water bottle holder and some with a panier, while I desired both features. This particular model conveniently offers both. The water bottle holder’s ample size accommodates my Nalgene water bottle, which is a definite plus. In terms of quality, this bag stands out as the best I’ve encountered, having meticulously compared it to numerous other brands. Furthermore, I found that purchasing it from this seller offered the most competitive price compared to what I observed at other bike shops. I wholeheartedly endorse both this seller and this product. The item arrived exceptionally well-packaged, in impeccable condition, and with speedy delivery.

This is my second Topeak bag. My first was nice enough that it ended up on my wife’s bike. It is not a huge amount of space on the top , but it works well. I stuff items in there that I might need and for riding the trails that is perfect. (I put in glasses a rain coat, a hat with plenty of room. The paniers I use only occasionally, but they are perfect for going to the store and picking up a few items – they won’t hold a weeks worth of groceries, but they do hold enough to eliminate car trips for me when I need to get there for a few items. I found the quality of the bag to be good. Nothing to complain about. There is a tag on the back of the bag and I use that to hang a light on. That works well. If they actually made a place to clip a light that would be great, but the tag works well enough for me. I have never had any bag loosen or fall off And the clip has always been easy to connect and detach. (I also have my rack slightly tilted towards the front as Topeka recommends). I use this bag on trails but am not an really rough and tumble biker. For me the bag is a good size and for almost all trips eliminates the need for a back pack or something else. The first bag I bought has worked well for a couple years now, so I expect the second to do the same. While they are pricey, I did check out other bags and I find the quality to be excellent and the price to be very competitive with comparable products.

I bought this bag as a replacement for a similar bag that I bought about 10 years ago. The previous bag was great, but it has faded over time and there are issues with the zippers. This new bag is great so far and it’s nice to have working zippers and zipper pulls again. It slides right on my old rack and holds everything I need for a day on the bike. My old bag didn’t have a rear bottle holder and I’m not really sure I’ll end up using it at all. The only negative to note is that the pannier bag is no longer a double zipper like it used to be, even though the product picture shows it to be. I sometimes carry larger items that don’t fit entirely in the bag (like a tennis racquet), and the double zipper was useful to zip from both sides as far as I could.

I like this bag alot, especially paired with their cIip-compatible luggage rack. I don’t own a car, so I use this bag for my daily commute, shopping, and trips to the beach on weekends. After 3 months, it has held up nicely. My clothes and food for work easily fit in the main compartment and one pannier. For groceries, it can hold approx. $60 worth of food, which is fine for me as I shop every other day. The panniers are plenty big for larger items such as a half gallon of milk and cereal boxes. The clip on/off feature to connect to the luggage rack is easy and quick, less than 5 seconds to mount or dismount. The only improvement I would suggest is beefier zippers. They have held up thus far, but can sometimes be a tad finicky and I suspect they will be the eventual first point of failure. Overall, a great product for the price.

This bag is just right for me with the topeak seatpost rack. The sides can open up to give mini panniers and the top can expand a bit for more space. It’s not big enough for a camping trip or a weekly shop but for example it will take my swimming stuff, bike tools and a spare jacket without any difficulty. Easy to slide on and off the rack and I think it looks good on the bike. Seems sturdy and well made. Beware, they make the same bag without the mini panniers which doesn’t give you the same versatility.
