I was shopping for a rear cargo rack for my Trek Cruiser Classic. I wanted something simple and clean looking, functional and well made. I found this Schwinn Folding Rear Rack on Amazon and it looked like the perfect rack for me. Looking at the photo, it looked like a very straight forward design that would fit my bike and would be a simple install. I read the reviews and found it interesting that several people commented on the lack of adequate installation instructions and difficulty installing the rack. I ordered the rack knowing Amazon has a quick and painless return policy if for any reason I was unhappy with my purchase. The rack arrived promptly and I was immediately impressed by the fit and finish, quality and look of the rack. I am not a bike mechanic, but I have been riding bikes for over 50 years and have basic bike repair skills. I read the instructions and would have to agree they offer minimal information that is vague at best. Looking at the rack, I found the design was quite simple and intuitive. The two sliding rails at the front of the rack attach to the seat post quick release skewer. In my case, my frame had two accessory braze-ons on the frame below the seat to mount the rails using the supplied bolts and washers. I then bolted the two rear upright supports to the rear dropout in the frame using the supplied bolts and washers. The upright supports are adjustable so you can get the required clearance above your tire. You simply remove the adjustment bolt and slide the chrome support arm down to the length you need and then align the two holes and replace the bolt. You then check to make sure the rack is level and centered, and then you tigthen all the bolts. The install took about 20 minutes to complete. I realize not all bike frames are the same and the install may vary to accommodate a specific bike. I highly recommend this product and I don’t think you will find a better rack at this price point.

NOTE : My review here, using a 10-scale, is solely based on my installation and use of this Schwinn Rear Bike Rack on my 20″-wheel folding bike (my only bicycle), which is the ONLY lightweight rear rack i could find online that can appropriately accommodate a 20″ wheel.

BTW, apparently the Bicycle Industry has NOT yet established (after 100 years) a product-type name or phrase to clearly distinguish “rear bicycle racks” (for the rear-end of bicycles, to carry loads) from “rear bicycle racks” (for the rear-end of cars and trucks, to carry bicycles) !!!

OVERALL APPEARANCE AND QUALITY : 10/10. A very simple and pleasing no-nonsense design.

CONSTRUCTION, FIT AND FINISH : 10/10. Aluminum alloy, with an excellent matte black paint finish and an appropriate, small, adhered Schwinn brand-label on the top-side.

DURABILITY IN USE : 8/10 – Having begun using it only recently, it is currently very durable for loads of up to 10-15 lbs, but the nuts-and-bolts of the top stay bracket-rods only sets the rack-position, and CANNOT permanently LOCK the rack position if it is regularly used for heavier loads.

PRACTICALITY IN USE : 9/10 – Excellent overall, but without any top-side spring arm (on some heavier racks, used as a helping hold on small load items), the user will have to purchase one or two bungee-cords for small loads, or attach a lightweight plastic LOAD BOX* for heavier loads, such as a bag of groceries.

(* NOTE : Personally, i have yet to find a practical, lightweight LOAD BOX for bicycles online, but a user can improvise attachment of another type of plastic box or wire basket on the rack, or just use detachable side pannier bags, which this rack CAN accommodate.)

WHEEL-SIZE ACCOMMODATION : This rack has height-adjustable side-struts (which fasten to the dropouts) for ANY bike wheel-size.

    ACCESSORIES ACCOMMODATION : 9/10 –

    – The rack-top has very long side tubing, which should accommodate ANY detachable side PANNIER BAGS or bungee-cords.

    – The side-struts are optimally angled to sufficiently protect PANNIER BAGS from the wheel.

    – The rack also has a welded-on REAR LIGHT BRACKET (with two bolt-holes) on the rear-end to accommodate most types of rear safety lights.

    – The rack perfectly and securely holds a bike mini U-lock in place, by inserting the round-end of lock into the opening at front-end of rack (eliminating the need for a U-lock bracket).

    – Unfortunately, the only rack-top LOCKING LOAD CASES (soft or hard) available for bicycles i found online are much more expensive, and ONLY lock onto more expensive racks from the same manufacturer.

RACK SECURITY : 1/10 – I dont know of ANY bicycle accessory manufacturers that include any means on their products to deter theft of these items (which would also add more weight to the bike), so if a thief SERIOUSLY wants your bike accessory, it can easily be removed and taken, using simple hand tools. However, when locking the bike to a secure object, the bike frame AND the rack CAN be moderately secured with a THICK, long-enough security cable, but this is NOT as secure as a U-lock, and a U-lock can NOT be secured around the bike frame, a stationary object AND the rack.

    OVERALL GRADE : 8/10. – Paul Merrill / Feb 2019.

Quality of this bike rear rack is great. Comes with parts for several different installation options, which I like because my bike is old. Only took about ten minutes to install once I decided on the specific installation method that would work with my bike. Nice rack and sturdy.

Material quality is good, better option if your not sure if other product will fit to your bike frame, this one as long as you have a saddle bar you can have a rear rack. Useful in carrying objects up to 9kg.

Whoever came up with this idea was CLEVER, it’s light (680 grams), strong, doubles as an OK fender, quick and easy 5 minute install, I believe the design and one piece construction will eliminate annoying rattles if you install it well or tighten as needed, bungee is a nice perk also.
Another reviewer mentioned that the hollow tube can be used as extra storage a hidden compartment for an inner tube and bike tools, cash etc.
My only complaint was it does not come with the 6 mm Allen key required or even mention that it is the only tool required . Apartment dwellers don’t tend to have a lot of tools ;).
That however is an easy fix just if I knew in advance (I could have ordered a set of Allen keys along with it, if you need one Amazon has quite a few for 5-7 bucks as add-on items.
Haven’t used it yet but I am quite confident that it will work for what I want, light groceries etc. I will report back if it does not, cheers!
