Bisher habe ich meine Fahrräder nicht gerade verwöhnt – ein bisschen Öl auf die Kette und ab und zu aufpumpen. Doch jetzt wollte ich das ändern und habe meine vier Räder gründlich gereinigt. Das ist eine Menge Arbeit, wenn man es jahrelang vernachlässigt hat!
Besonders der Antrieb sammelt viel Schmutz. Mit Lappen und Antriebsreiniger bekommt man zwar einiges weg, aber zwischen den Kettengliedern bleibt es hartnäckig.
Also habe ich mir ein Kettenreinigungsgerät gekauft. Mein erster Versuch war ein günstiges Modell für etwa 15 Euro. Leider stellte sich heraus: Wer billig kauft, kauft zweimal. Das Ding flog bei der Benutzung auseinander und landete im Müll.
Danach habe ich mich für das Kettenreinigungsgerät von ParkTool entschieden. Dieses Modell wird oft in YouTube-Videos empfohlen. Schon beim Auspacken merkt man den Unterschied: Es ist größer und stabiler. Der Verschluss sitzt fest, und die Bürsten im Inneren sind robust.
Zur Anwendung: Zuerst habe ich Antriebsreiniger aufgesprüht und den gröbsten Dreck mit einem Lappen entfernt. Dann kam das Gerät zum Einsatz. Reinigungsmittel einfüllen, Kette einlegen und verschließen. Dann zieht man die Kette etwa 30-mal durch. Anschließend das Ganze noch einmal mit Wasser wiederholen.
Das Ergebnis war beeindruckend. Die Kette war sauber, auch innen. Danach nur noch ölen und fertig.
Fazit: Billig ist nicht immer gut. Mit 45 Euro ist das ParkTool-Set nicht ganz günstig, aber es lohnt sich. Das Gerät ist leicht zu handhaben, die Teile sind austauschbar und das Ergebnis überzeugt. Absolut empfehlenswert!

Prior to buying this product, I just occasionally used an aerosol can that was supposed to be a degreaser/lubricant combined. It, along with some rags, did a decent job on the chain, but I never had any tool to clean the sprocket. After reading the reviews on this product, I was impressed and decided to give it a try.
Here are my impressions: The instructions were very easy to follow. I don’t have a bike stand, so I leaned the handlebar of the bike up against a wall, inserted the chain into the device and moved the pedal backwards to degrease it. (I soon discovered that the bike wanted to move backwards, so I had someone help me hold the brake to prevent that movement. If I were doing it by myself, I would simply tie something around the brake control on the handlebar in order to keep it engaged.)
Rather than using the supplied degreaser, I used Simple Green, which is much cheaper, and worked really well.
The brush used to clean the sprockets got them cleaner than they have been in 10 years, but I did notice a few bristles from the brush got stuck in the chain. They were removed with a little effort.
After degreasing everything, I emptied the contents of the plastic container, cleaned it out, and started to lubricate the chain. Overall, this method of cleaning/degreasing was not nearly as messy as my old method. That came as a total surprise to me, as I was expecting somewhat of a mess.
After finishing everything, I took the bike for a test ride. I started hearing a strange noise coming from the rear wheel, but I had a hard time isolating it. After some time, I found out that problem was the Simple Green had removed the lubricant from the wheel bearings. After I re-lubed that, there was no sound at all, and everything ran smoothly.

I bought this for my road bike to clean the chain and gears after 3 years of use. Here’s my review.
The pro’s:
– My chain and gears are much cleaner than before. Yay it works!
– The liquid degreaser is excellent, works really well.
– The tool works but see caveats below.
– The supplied brush works pretty well for the gears/cassette.
The caveats:
– I think this was said in other reviews but if you are going to use the tool YOU NEED either: a bike stand (I used the Bikehand Bike Repair Stand), a place to hang your bike or another person to help you do the cleaning. Basically a way to pedal the bicycle forward, lift the bike so the wheel isn’t on the ground and hold the cleaning tool. If you have 3 hands I guess that works too. I think a few of the bad reviews are due to this.
– Have rags and towels handy because it can get messy. Since I had 3 years of grime on my chain it immediately turned the degreaser black. Initially my bike wasn’t level so the black degreaser was spilling out of the tool and onto my floor. Once I got that resolved while turning my pedals the degreaser would flick out of the front/back of the tool, depending on if I was pedaling forward or backwards. So I had to place towels below the bike. Not the end of the world but something I wish I knew beforehand.
– All of the black greasy mess that was on your bike chain is now at the bottom of the tool and needs to be cleaned. With that said taking the tool apart wasn’t too bad.
Overall it’s a good tool, works well as long as you keep the caveats mentioned above in mind.

This makes cleaning the chain much easier however I don’t think the degreasing fluid is worth it. The bottle is empty after cleaning three chains. Using a good quality dish soap also works well at degreasing. It takes some time to get use to positioning the cleaner on the chain so you don’t pull the chain off the ring. With a little use this is overcome quickly. If you clean your chain often this definitely makes it easier.

Inside the box, they provide you with the cleaning solution, the tool/ handle and a cleaning brush.
The solution is only enough for maybe three cleanings. So I keep on refilling the bottle with a solution of small squirt of DAWN DISH DETERGENT and the rest warm water. That solution cleans my chains quite well.
I always clean out the Park Chain cleaning tool after each chain cleaning. That includes the brushes, magnet and foam piece. You get the best cleaning job with a clean Park Tool.
The brushes seem to endure good so far. I’ve cleaned three chains now. I put my bikes up on a stand. That works better for rotating the pedal while holding the Park Cleaning Tool onto the chain – LEVEL. Occasionally, I have to add extra cleaning solution while the tool is still attached to the chain.
The brush’s design is good for getting into the front and rear chain sprockets. The half rounded end slips between the sprockets good. But I always use my high pressure air hose to thoroughly clean between sprockets.
Ideally, it’s best to remove the chain and let your chain soak overnight in chain oil. This way, the oil gets deeply into all areas of your chain. But failing that, take the time to ensure you use chain oil (dry/wet) onto EACH chain linkage. I utilse a paper towel under the chain as I oil away.
So you clean your chain, then clean your park tool, then lubricate your chain. A three step process with each cleaning is best. You don’t want busted or non working chains at the wrong time. This is where preventative maintenance is a must. Use top quality chain lubes too and. Don’t cheap out here.
