Oumers Universal Bike Chain Tool is an easy to use, comfortable & inexpensive bike tool that would be a good addition to anyone’s bike toolkit. It’s built well enough to use in your home bike shop, small enough to through into a trailhead toolkit, but too big for you to want to take it out on the trail w/you.

The chain tool has a comfortable plastic coated handle, which aids in securely gripping it while easily removing pins from 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 speed bicycle chains. It comes w/a chain hook which aides in holding the chain together while inserting a new chain pin into the chain. The tool also comes w/an extra pin for the tool, which is stored in the handle of the tool. If you’ve never used a chain tool to “break” a chain, no need to worry, Oumer has included a colorful & simple to follow instructions card w/the tool. Be sure to give it a read.

When I used the chain tool, I was able to comfortably & effortlessly turn the large plastic knob, easily removing the chain pin. The overall feel of the tool after using it to break & insert a new pin in my chain, is that it’s a pretty good value for the price. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of use out of the Oumers Universal Bike Chain Tool. However, this is most likely not a tool that will last 20+ years. For that, you’d be looking to spend 3x the money.

If you need a bicycle chain tool, Oumers Universal Bike Chain Tool is definitely an inexpensive, easy to use & all around good value option. There are definitely worse options out there.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review, I hope you found it helpful.

Cheap and durable enough for most bicycle owners. It’s not a “shop quality “ tool but it’s also not listed as one. I don’t see any reason this couldn’t last a lifetime in most peoples use cases. Comes with a chain hanger to help take the load out of the chain while chains on the bike. This helps break the chain on the bike easily and helps when installing the chain again. The handle also has an extra breaker pin if you happen to lose or break the one I stalled. If you are breaking the pin you shouldn’t keep forcing it. Try using a penetrating spray like WD40 or anything stronger to break down rust etc. After you do this you should have no problem breaking any chain with almost no effort.

Oumer’s Chain tool —- I haven’t used it extensively and I admit that I bought this tool without reading all the reviews. So, from my limited experience with this tool I feel that it does the job of removing chain pins easily and efficiently. As others mentioned there were no instructions with the tool but experience with other chain break tools kept me from making mistakes that resulted in bent chain supports and broken push pins. The hollow screw (opposite the pin) needs to be screwed in to support the chain while you are twisting the handle and applying pressure to push out the pin. The hollow end will catch the pin if it is removed completely.

BTW – when putting chain back together purchase new replacement pins, Yes, you can save a few $$ by using the old pin. If you completely remove the pin it is tough to align the links/holes to get the old pin in correctly. It can be done but may cause the chain to bind or seize. Replacement pins have a long slightly smaller diameter section that you insert into the chain links. This section guides the slightly larger diameter chain link pin into the holes. When the link pin is fully inserted remove the chain from the tool and use a pliers to snap off the guide section of the pin. Search Amazon for Bike chain replacement pins – know the brand of chain, number of gears in your rear cassette, and make some measurements of the chain pin length and it’s diameter. this link is an example: “Shimano 10-Speed Replacement Chain Pins”

If, in the future, you want to remove your chain for cleaning etc use a replacement link similar to: “YDZN Bicycle Chain Link Connector, 11 Speed Quick Master Link Joint Clip (2 Pcs,Silver)” Park tool sells a “pliers” for use when installing and removing this type of link. Again, these links are not “generic” so you’ll need to know the chain you are using the replacement link in. Use of these links make it easy to remove the chain for cleaning or repair.

PROs — fits my hand comfortably and the large handle is easy to twist. in and out. The hollow screw captures the pushed out pin and supports the chain while working on it. An extra pin included in the handle along with the wire chain hook
CONs – as others mentioned it is a bit large to be carrying “just in case” you need a major chain overhaul while on the trail or road. It can stay in my tool box – it fits nicely in there.

Question I have: looking at the assortment of chain tools on Amazon why are there so many tools that look just like the Oumer’s tool but have different names. They are all in about the same price range.. Strange……. 🙂

I have not received any support or compensation from Oumer’s or from any company selling replacement pins or replacement links. Why give it only 4 stars? I reserve 5 stars for something that really blows my socks off. This is a good tool and “I like it”

If, after using this tool more I have information to add to this review I’ll do that. Till then, enjoy your days on the trail.

This chain tool works fantastic. I need to use it one or two times a year. It does the job well and I keep it in my kit. It’s not well finished, but it is also very inexpensive. It is however robustly built and works perfectly. I recommend it!

I asked a question on here before buying the chain breaker. Got no immediate response and ordered the chain breaker. It does work on Shadow Conspiracy chains. This morning I got an ignorant teply from someone saybg it would work. By someone who has no idea. It does not work on Shadow Conspiracy chains. Seems like a decent chain breaker. But I have not used it yet and it does not work for what I purchased it for.

My trusty chain tool finally broke after 50 years. My search for a replacement led me to this tool. I used to own/operate a bike shop decades ago, so I am picky about my bike tools. Rather than using the quick link to connect chains, I like to punch out a pin most of the way and then then use the chain tool to put it back together. The chain hook allows me to re-spread the link out to loosen it. Otherwise it is very tight.

My only complaint is that it is so small it can require quite a bit of force to operate on a tight link. My old hands are not as strong as they used to be. A small hollow tube extension solves that problem for now.

No frills. Just a very effective simple chain breaker. Pin and overall build quality higher than expected. Chain, pin, and pin hole all aligned like it should.
